Piazzolla rescued by the tangueros

The Piazzolla celebrations are getting near and even the most titled media are rolling up their sleeves in order to commemorate the great composer properly. Above all the others, Il Giornale della Musica towers for timing and largeness of views since it published a brilliant centerfold with the opinion of us tangueros, as well as the learned articles by a couple of prestigious musicologists, namely Giordano Montecchi and Stefano Zenni.
Marco Castellani, the TMN and TQR's regular contributor who was recently called by our Director "a stranger in the Land of Truth", made every effort to write for once an impartial column about the conflictual relations between Astor Piazzolla and the Tango. The result is the uncut release of the piece with just one misprint, though venial, that our specialized readers will pick out, and remit, in the same way as the generous Il Giornale della Musica will forgive their free-of-charge peek at the following extract from the June issue - which is now available in its entirety at four Euros.

To rescue a great musician from his admirers is the most indelicate and the vainest dialectics' application: sooner or later, we all will convince ourselves that, according to Lady Windermere's reasons, the reasons will never convince anybody. On the other hand, we fear that any intervention aiming to put Astor Piazzolla out of the music establishment's reach or to dampen his Academy torcida's enthusiasm, could be welcomed by those cultured terraces as much as a polite own goal by mr. Comunardo Nicolai, the Gentleman Conspirator. Or it could at worst appear as a style exercise, a ballistic pedantry or even an unfortunate case of friendly fire. Besides, to throw discredit on the Gideon Kremer's never ending performances en pantoufles and on the Richard Galliano's athletic improvisations, as well as to to be against the critics' oìdo gordo and the publishers' intrigues, is often taken as a plotted interference in the home affairs of the Piazzolla Brand, whose first claim “the Tango lonely star, the unique flower from the stony ground”, won't brook such criticism. Taking part to this conspiracy will at least make us feel useful. (to be continued)

The consolation of literature

After the Spoon River Anthology, the creative epitaph switched the easy and gruesome dress of the revenge on the next departed for a real poetic dimension in which the successful irony on other people's dust gives way to the detailed social critique. If, for my part, i would like to be remembered with the Alberto Arbasino's words "often respected, still intact is the secret of his treasures", i also aknowledge the following epitaph, which was formerly dedicated to Francis Chartres in 1732 and lately reported by Adolfo Bioy Casares in his "De jardines Ajenos" - Buenos Aires 1997, to be perfect for the mobsters of G8, FMI and WTO, and moreover for those in our government, with its president in the first place.
Then, you can also name a one-way road after him...

EL CUERPO de FRANCIS CHARTRES,
Que, con INFLEXIBLE CONSTANCIA,
E INEVITABLE UNIFORMIDAD de Vida,
PERSISTIO
MORTALES
Y fue Còmplice de sus execrables Designios,
Para dar a la Posteridad
Una PRUEBA y un EJEMPLO insignes
Del ìnfimo valor que tiene
Una RIQUEZA ENORME
A los ojos de DIOS.
